Penang is optimistic about attracting a significant rise in visitors from India for next year's Thaipusam celebration, thanks to its well-executed strategic plans and preparations.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised that these efforts will not only boost tourism but also solidify the state’s position as a premier global heritage tourism destination.
Chow noted that the state government's initiative to establish direct flights between Chennai, India, and Penang last year has already shown positive results, with Penang International Airport reporting a 51.43% increase in Indian tourist arrivals.
This, he said, is just the beginning, as Penang is also positioning itself for growth in multiple sectors, including manufacturing, investment, business, and agrotechnology.
Looking ahead, Penang is particularly focused on the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign, in which the state will be prominently promoted as a key heritage tourism destination.
According to Chow, Thaipusam celebrations in Penang are always lively, drawing both local and international visitors to the state each year.
This vibrant atmosphere highlights Penang’s role as a symbol of unity, where various races and religions come together to celebrate.
Despite its rapid development, Penang continues to nurture and celebrate its rich traditions and cultural heritage.
Chow stressed that, in line with the spirit of Thaipusam—symbolising the triumph of good over evil—Penang remains committed to ensuring the welfare of its people, including the Indian community.
The state has been focused on strengthening its economy and promoting social development in a fair, just, and inclusive manner, ensuring that no one is left behind.
As Penang prepares for the Thaipusam festivities which will be celebrated By Hindus on Tuesday, Chow hopes that the occasion will be celebrated with faith, gratitude, humility, and unity.
Thaipusam, a major Hindu festival, commemorates the moment when Lord Murugan received a sacred spear from his mother, Dewi Parvati, to defeat the demon Soorapadman and restore peace and prosperity to the world.
With its continued focus on growth, heritage, and inclusivity, Penang looks forward to a prosperous year ahead, welcoming more visitors from India and around the world to experience its rich cultural offerings. – February, 10, 2025
