KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 — Police have detained two local men to assist in the investigation into the sale of floor mats featuring designs resembling mosques and the Kaaba at a business bazaar in George Town recently.

Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the two men, aged 26 and 41, are the owner and an employee at the carpet stall, according to a report published today in Utusan Malaysia.

“Police received a report from a local man who discovered that the prayer mat he bought from a bazaar stall had a design resembling the Kaaba and a mosque.

“Earlier, while at one of the bazaar stalls in the city centre, he noticed several floor mats with suspected Kaaba and mosque designs being sold to the public. He purchased one and subsequently lodged a police report,” he said.

Mohd Alwi added that the case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
