PENANG DAP plans to lodge a police report after a group of about 200 people assembled at Bertam, Kepala Batas to protest a hardware outlet owner for allegedly hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
State DAP Information head Joshua Woo said that the group ignored the police directive not to assemble.
"We in DAP respected the call by the police and stood down. We just handed out flags to the community to mark the Independence Day celebrations due soon but another group held a protest," said Woo.
Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong issued a similar statement, saying that the police should probe the group believed to be headed by Umno Youth head Dr Akmal Saleh.
Earlier, Akmal made good on his claim of wanting to come to Bertam to "educate" the outlet owner and staffers about flying the flag correctly.
He marched about 1.5km in Bertam, shouting "Merdeka - Merdeka" while stressing that he was not a bully.
He said he just wanted to make a point that the national flag is something sacred and it's symbolic presence must be protected at all times.
Police deployed a light strike force unit to monitor the brief protest. - August 14, 2025
