A Bukit Mertajam construction site is shut down after a foreign worker died from injuries sustained when a load of plywood fell from a crane.
BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Penang has issued a stop-work order and a Prohibition Notice to an employer following a fatal accident at a construction site in the Bukit Minyak Industrial Park.
Director Hairozie Asri stated that preliminary investigations found a load of plywood being lifted by a mobile crane became dislodged and fell onto a worker, causing him to fall approximately six metres.
The foreign worker later succumbed to severe injuries at Hospital Seberang Jaya on March 24.
Hairozie confirmed the accident occurred at the site on March 19 at about 10.40 am, while the victim, an employee of a subcontractor, was carrying out roofing installation works.
“The accident clearly reflects a serious failure in workplace safety management,” he said in a statement.
He added that all parties involved have been ordered to cease operations immediately until all safety requirements are fully complied with.
