Penang is the first state in Malaysia to offer certification for a professional hairdressing training programme, according to Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Ecohair Academy and University Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) have collaborated to offer a six-month programme for professional certification.

Chow said that this program makes Ecohair Academy the first and only hairdressing academy in Malaysia to partner with Utar, which is also a “groundbreaking initiative” for the entire Malaysian hairdressing industry.

He also acknowledged the challenges, in particular, the lack of government attention, support, and certification in the hairdressing industry.

“Ecohair Academy has brought significant achievement and pride to Penang by establishing an educational partnership with Utar,” said Chow during the launching of the education partnership between Ecohair Academy and Utar’s Centre for Corporate & Community Development (CCCD) in Bayan Baru on Dec 21.

He also said that the state government would explore opportunities for further collaboration with Jin Tan, the founder of Ecohair Academy, in terms of providing more support to Penang hairdressers to obtain professional certification.

“(This is) so that Penang’s hairdressers can become among the first certified professionals in Malaysia,” said Chow.

The certification programme, which started in August this year, lasts for six months and has eleven students who will become the first batch of graduates in February next year.

According to Chow, there are roughly 1,500 hair saloons and 5,000 hairdressers in the state. Meanwhile, there are about 50,000 hairdressers in the whole country. He remains optimistic that the hairdressing industry will provide numerous employment opportunities while contributing to Penang’s economy and offering career growth.

“This large and stable industry provides numerous employment opportunities, contributes to Penang’s economy, and offers many individuals the chance for career advancement,” he said.
