Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has announced a new five-year partnership with Canon Marketing Malaysia that will see the camera maker become the hill’s Official Imaging Partner.

Aimed at supporting biodiversity conservation, environmental awareness and community engagement initiatives at the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, Canon will provide professional cameras, lenses and high-quality printing solutions to help document and showcase the biodiversity found within the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve. The company is no stranger to Penang Hill, having supported and sponsored the Penang Hill Festival since it was first introduced in 2018.

The Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in 2021. Covering 12,481 hectares, the reserve encompasses Penang Hill and its surrounding areas and is home to more than 2,000 species of flora and over 500 species of fauna. PHC describes it as Malaysia’s only urban-adjacent coastal and terrestrial rainforest ecosystem of its kind.

A key focus of the partnership is biodiversity documentation, with Canon supporting PHC’s Bird Documentation Project by providing professional camera equipment to build a long-term visual archive of bird species found within the biosphere reserve. The archive will act as a resource for research, education and conservation efforts, with the project developed in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society, which will provide expertise on bird identification and documentation.

“Guided by the philosophy of ‘kyosei’, living and working together for the common good, this partnership reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

We believe imaging can be a powerful tool to elevate conservation and awareness efforts. Through this partnership, we are bringing Canon’s strengths in imaging to support the documentation of Malaysia’s natural heritage while encouraging greater appreciation for biodiversity,” – Masato Yoshiie, Canon Marketing Malaysia President and CEO

Beyond conservation work, the partnership also aims to encourage greater public participation. PHC and Canon will jointly organise annual photography and videography workshops at Penang Hill, including programmes held during the Penang Hill Festival, with the goal of promoting nature conservation through visual storytelling.

Visitors can also expect to see more bird-related attractions on the hill. Selected photographs featuring native and migratory bird species found at Penang Hill will be displayed at Penang Hill Station, while five dedicated birdwatching spots will be established to improve accessibility for birdwatchers, photographers and nature enthusiasts.

The collaboration reflects a broader effort by both organisations to combine conservation initiatives with imaging technology to raise awareness of Penang Hill’s biodiversity while creating educational opportunities for visitors and the wider community.
