The SBG casting yard for Penang’s first LRT is 90% complete, set to produce 8,800 concrete segments for the elevated guideway with operations starting in 2025.
PENANG: The segmental box girder (SBG) casting yard for the Penang Mutiara Line LRT project is now 90% complete. This key facility in Sungai Ular, Kulim will produce the concrete segments forming the elevated guideway’s main structure.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed satisfaction with the steady progress during a site visit. He said it reflects growing momentum in delivering the state’s first LRT system.
The 15.378-hectare yard is a critical step as the project moves into its next phase. Full completion of the facility is expected by May 2026 following the start of works in April 2025.
SRS LRT project director Adil Putra Ahmad said the yard will produce approximately 8,800 SBG segments. These are required for the 23.7-kilometre alignment from Silicon Island to Komtar.
Supported by 400 personnel and 20 mould sets, the yard will produce up to 350 segments per month at peak. The first segment has already been successfully cast.
The segmental construction method was chosen for its suitability to Penang’s urban environment. It improves efficiency while minimising ground-level disruptions and enhancing safety.
Piling and pier construction are currently underway. The first 40-metre spans, consisting of 13 segments, are expected to be launched at sites like Bandar Seri Pinang between July and August.
Chow advised the public that SBG launching is typically done at night in busy areas. He noted there may be necessary adjustments to traffic management plans as construction increases.
With continued coordination and prompt approvals, the state government remains confident. The project is on track for its targeted commencement of operations in 2031.
