The Penang MATTA Fair aims for 50,000 visitors and RM30 million in sales, featuring 320 booths and focusing on diverse destinations amid global uncertainties
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang edition of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair is targeting 50,000 visitors and an estimated RM30 million in sales.
Penang MATTA chapter chairman Carolyn Leong believes this target is achievable, surpassing the nearly RM25 million recorded last year.
She attributed the confidence to attractive travel packages and strong participation from airlines offering extensive promotions.
“A total of 320 booths have been registered, with 90 exhibitors participating, comprising both international and domestic players showcasing a diverse range of travel products and services,” she said.
The event will be held at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre on April 25-26.
Leong noted an increase in direct flights from Penang to several Chinese cities is expected to further boost travel demand.
Amid geopolitical uncertainties, the fair will focus on alternative destinations across Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
It will also promote domestic travel in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 through Cuti-Cuti Malaysia packages.
In line with VM2026, MATTA is encouraging greater participation from domestic travel agents to support the local industry.
Leong expressed appreciation for Tourism Malaysia’s strong support, with 20 booths participating this year.
Other state tourism organisations joining include the Langkawi Development Authority and Johor Tourism.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said this year’s fair marks a defining chapter for Malaysia’s tourism sector.
He stated that VM2026 is a strategic national effort to increase international arrivals and strengthen domestic tourism.
“As one of Malaysia’s most iconic destinations, Penang offers a unique blend of heritage, gastronomy, culture and modern lifestyle,” Wong said.
He added that Penang will play a critical role in achieving the nation’s tourism targets.
