A viral video recently left Malaysians reeling in anger, showing a motorcyclist being stopped by a traffic police officer after the former was caught breaking traffic laws in Ayer Itam, Penang.
Circulating online, including in this post by Facebook user Razlan Airyl Z, the video showed the motorcyclist being stopped by the unnamed traffic officer, who was recording the whole incident.
A Penang motorcyclist threw insults at a traffic police officer when he was stopped for running a red light
Based on the conversation, the man had run a red light at Ayer Itam’s Thean Teik Road, but instead of complying, he turned aggressive by hurling insults at the police officer.
The man had given his IC and driving licence to the police officer when the latter asked him to produce them and was on his mobile phone trying to contact someone at the start of the interaction.
However, the man repeatedly threw insults and obscene words at the police officer, dissatisfied with being issued a summon.
The suspect is remanded for 3 days and may face up to 5 years in jail if convicted
As reported by Malaysia Gazette, following the incident, which happened at 6.45pm yesterday (3 October), the police officer had lodged a police report against the suspect.
According to acting Timur Laut District Police Chief Superintendent Lee Swee Saka, investigations revealed that the 25-year-old suspect had thrown obscenities at the police officer when the latter was about to issue a summon to him.
The police then arrested the suspect at 10.30pm later that night. He is now being remanded for 3 days, with the case being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
Notably, should the suspected be charged and convicted under Section 509 of the Penal Code for words or gestures intended to insult the modesty of a person, he may face imprisonment of up to 5 years, a fine or both.
