Penang PAS is in the process of refining its list of potential candidates for the upcoming Sungai Bakap state seat by-election. This was confirmed by Penang PAS commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff, who indicated that the list would soon be submitted to the party leadership for final approval.
Muhammad Fauzi explained that although Penang PAS already has a preliminary list of candidates, they remain open to suggestions and feedback from all party levels, including grassroots members. This inclusive approach ensures that all voices within the party are heard and considered.
"Regarding the possibility of a candidate from the family of the late Nor Zamri Latiff, we will have to wait and see. The shortlisted candidates must undergo a thorough review from various perspectives, including their personal qualities. This comprehensive evaluation is the reason for the delay in finalizing the list," he stated in a conversation with Bernama.
He further mentioned that the final list of candidates might be ready for submission to the party leadership after the Election Commission (EC) meeting scheduled for this Thursday, depending on the outcome of the meeting.
Muhammad Fauzi also expressed gratitude to Bersatu for supporting PAS's bid to defend the Sungai Bakap seat. The seat became vacant following the death of its incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 due to complications from stomach inflammation. The EC is expected to hold a special meeting on June 6 to establish the key dates for the by-election.
Nor Zamri Latiff previously won the Sungai Bakap seat during the Penang state election in August last year. He secured victory by defeating Pakatan Harapan candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes. His passing has prompted the need for a by-election, and Penang PAS is working diligently to ensure they have a strong candidate ready to contest and uphold the legacy of the late representative.
The selection process emphasizes the importance of choosing a candidate who not only has the support of the party but also embodies the values and dedication required to serve the constituents of Sungai Bakap effectively.
