Penang PAS is currently finalizing the list of potential candidates for the upcoming Sungai Bakap state seat by-election, as confirmed by the party's Penang commissioner, Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff. Despite having a preliminary list, the party remains open to suggestions from various levels, including grassroots members.

Muhammad Fauzi indicated that there is still uncertainty regarding whether a candidate from the family of the late Nor Zamri Latiff will be included. He emphasized that the shortlisted candidates need to be scrutinized from multiple perspectives, particularly focusing on their personal qualities, which is why the party is taking extra time to finalize the list. He mentioned this during a phone interview with Bernama.

The finalized list of candidates is likely to be submitted to the party leadership for final approval following the Election Commission (EC) meeting scheduled for this Thursday. The submission depends on the developments at the EC meeting.

Muhammad Fauzi also expressed gratitude towards Bersatu for their support in allowing PAS to defend the Sungai Bakap seat. The seat became vacant following the death of the incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 due to stomach inflammation. In response, the EC has organized a special meeting on Thursday, June 6, to decide the critical dates for the by-election.

In the Penang state election held in August last year, Nor Zamri emerged victorious over Pakatan Harapan's candidate, Nurhidayah Che Rose, by a margin of 1,563 votes. This victory underscored the significance of the Sungai Bakap seat for PAS and its coalition.

Penang PAS's meticulous approach in finalizing its candidate list demonstrates its commitment to fielding a strong candidate who can uphold the party's values and maintain the support of the electorate. The inclusion of grassroots feedback in this process highlights the party's democratic approach and its effort to ensure that the chosen candidate has broad-based support.

As the by-election approaches, the strategic collaboration between PAS and Bersatu will be crucial in retaining the Sungai Bakap seat. The outcome of the Election Commission's meeting will set the stage for the by-election, determining the timeline and the formal start of the campaign. With the legacy of Nor Zamri Latiff still fresh in the minds of voters, PAS aims to select a candidate who can continue his work and secure another victory for the party.

The final selection and subsequent campaign will be pivotal moments for Penang PAS as they strive to retain their influence in the region. The forthcoming by-election not only holds significance for the party but also serves as a measure of their continuing support among the electorate in Sungai Bakap.
