In a swift response to PAS retaining its Sungai Bakap seat with a larger majority, Penang PH chairman Chow Kon Yeow acknowledged the election results as a clear reflection of the electorate's sentiment regarding the current political climate in Sungai Bakap, Penang, and across Malaysia.
“This result is a clear message from the people about the current political happenings,” Chow remarked to reporters at PH’s vote tallying centre located at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort. He emphasized that, despite the robust cooperation among the component parties within the PH-BN unity pact, the election outcome indicated a significant gap in effectively communicating their stance on recent national, state, and local issues to the voters.
Chow highlighted that the defeat was not merely due to the choice of candidate but stemmed from broader concerns. "Our attempts to explain these issues might not have resonated with them," he stated. He stressed that the outcome was a reflection of the broader discontent among voters over national issues like the diesel subsidy, the escalating cost of living, and perceived rising inflation. "We lost the narrative despite all the hard work trying to convince the voters," he added.
Chow also addressed the turnout, noting a significant drop in the number of ethnic Chinese and Indian voters by about 13% compared to the previous state elections. This decline, he suggested, could have impacted the results by approximately 3,000 votes, thereby contributing to the larger majority secured by PN.
Looking ahead, Chow, who is also the Penang Chief Minister, emphasized the need for a thorough post-mortem of the election results to understand the underlying reasons for the loss. "We remain as the representatives for this parliamentary constituency, so we will continue to manage all issues here," he asserted.
He reassured the voters that, irrespective of the political setback, the state government would address all issues raised by the electorate during the campaign period. "Putting politics aside, the state will look into all issues raised by the voters here during the campaign period," Chow reiterated, ensuring that the state would not neglect those in need of assistance.
The Sungai Bakap by-election serves as a stark reminder of the electorate's concerns and the necessity for political parties to maintain a deep understanding and connection with the voters' issues. Moving forward, Penang PH’s commitment to addressing these concerns and improving its communication strategies will be crucial in regaining the trust and support of the voters.
Chow's reflections on the defeat highlight the complexities of navigating national issues at the local level and underscore the importance of aligning political strategies with the immediate needs and concerns of the constituents. The Sungai Bakap results are a clarion call for PH to refine its approach and ensure that the voices of the people are not just heard but acted upon effectively.
As the Penang PH chairman emphasized, this loss is a learning opportunity. The focus now shifts to understanding the electorate's mindset and crafting policies and narratives that resonate more deeply with their concerns and aspirations.
