Since the start of campaigning on June 22, the Penang police have approved 61 permits for various campaign activities, speeches, and friendly visits by political parties involved in the Sungai Bakap by-election. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad reported that, as of the eighth day of campaigning, 16 additional permits have been approved with no rejections to date.
Hamzah also noted that there has been only one police report and investigation related to the by-election, filed under Section 427 of the Penal Code for damaging campaign materials, including political party flags and banners.
“The police also advise campaigners to ensure that campaign areas, such as rally sites and meeting places, are cleaned up after use and to avoid damaging public property,“ he said in a statement.
The Sungai Bakap by-election, set for July 6, features a head-to-head contest between Pakatan Harapan candidate Dr. Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional candidate Abidin Ismail. This by-election follows the unfortunate passing of the incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 due to abdominal inflammation.
The Election Commission has designated a 14-day campaign period, starting the day after the nominations were announced last Saturday and ending at 11:59 pm on July 5.
In the midst of the campaign, the police have been vigilant in maintaining order and ensuring a fair process. They have reminded all candidates and their supporters to respect public spaces and leave rally sites and meeting places clean and undamaged. This directive aims to foster a respectful and orderly campaign environment.
The police's role extends beyond just approving permits; they are also tasked with monitoring compliance with election laws and ensuring that the campaigns are conducted peacefully. The single police report filed so far suggests a relatively calm and orderly campaign period.
The Sungai Bakap by-election is a significant event for the local community, as it will determine their representation in the state assembly. Both candidates, Dr. Joohari Ariffin and Abidin Ismail, are actively engaging with voters, presenting their platforms and visions for the future of Sungai Bakap.
As the campaign period progresses, the police will continue to oversee activities, providing necessary permits and ensuring that all campaign practices are conducted within the legal framework. Their efforts are crucial in ensuring a smooth and fair election process.
