Penang police successfully dismantled a heroin processing laboratory in a recent raid, apprehending a 49-year-old man and seizing an assortment of drugs valued at RM125,000 on Saturday (February 17). The deputy police chief, Datuk Mohamed Usof Jan Mohamad, revealed that the arrest took place in the Tanjung Tokong area, where the suspect was taken into custody in his apartment car park around 7 a.m.

Upon inspecting the suspect's Honda motorcycle, authorities uncovered 34 packets of heroin weighing 820 grams and 20 packets of syabu (570 grams). Subsequently, a raid on the man's rented house led to the seizure of an additional three packets of heroin (260 grams), two packets of syabu (30 grams), and a box containing three plastic bags of caffeine (19,300 grams). The rented premises also revealed equipment, hardware, and chemicals believed to be used in processing drugs for distribution.

Deputy Chief Mohamed Usof disclosed that the investigation pointed to the suspect as a drug dealer who had transformed his rented house into a heroin processing laboratory and packaging center. The confiscated drugs, with an estimated value of RM125,000, could have catered to the needs of approximately 65,000 drug addicts.

According to the ongoing investigation, the arrested man had recently been released from prison for a similar offense. The suspect admitted to acquiring knowledge of drug processing and packaging from a fellow inmate during his time behind bars. The individual had reportedly engaged in solo drug dealing activities since September of the previous year, immediately following his release. Renting the apartment for RM1,300 per month, the suspect, with three prior drug-related records, has been remanded for seven days to aid investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Following the arrest, authorities also seized a Nissan Teana car, two Honda PCX and Honda EX5 motorcycles, and RM15,500 in cash, bringing the total value of the confiscated drugs and items to RM203,000. The successful operation represents a significant crackdown on drug-related activities in the region. The police are intensifying efforts to curb drug trafficking and dismantle operations that pose a threat to public safety.
