GEORGE TOWN – Penang has spent RM3.31 million on a fleet of 15 new cars for use by the state executive councillors and senior officials, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed today.

The vehicles – Toyota Camry 2.5V (AT) (CBU) models – were delivered on March 4 and handed over on April 4. Each unit costs around RM220,780, inclusive of road tax and excise duty.

He said the purchase was to replace the existing official cars, which had been in service for over five years.

“10 vehicles are for the state executive council members, three for ex-officio members, and one each for the speaker and deputy speaker,” Chow said at a press conference after the Penang state assembly sitting.

Chow was responding to a written question from Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng, who had asked for details on the number, type, and cost of vehicles procured for the state government’s use.

Asked whether the new fleet comprised electric vehicles in line with Penang’s green policy goals, Chow reportedly said he was unsure of the cars’ specifications. – May 20, 2025
