GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government will proceed with its Aidilfitri open house, albeit in a modest manner.
This decision comes despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent call for ministries, agencies and government-linked companies to refrain from hosting such events as a cost-saving measure.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state has yet to receive any official circular from the Chief Secretary to the Government regarding the directive.
He explained that arrangements for the event are already advanced, with invitations issued.
“The State Executive Council has also not had the opportunity to formally discuss the matter,” Chow told reporters.
He emphasised that the open house, jointly organised with the Penang Governor, is a tradition to engage with the people.
“It has always been held in a modest manner, not extravagantly,” he added.
For celebrations at the state department and agency level, Chow advised organising internal or potluck gatherings to minimise costs.
He stressed the importance of such platforms in strengthening racial unity.
“In uncertain economic conditions, small-scale gatherings like these provide space for the public to come together and celebrate togetherness,” Chow said.
