Penang’s Silicon Island local plan, Malaysia’s first for a greenfield area, targets RM1.1 trillion in GDP and 220,000 jobs by 2050.
GEORGE TOWN: Penang has launched the publicity programme for its final draft of the Penang Silicon Island Local Plan 2050, the first such plan in Malaysia designed specifically for a fully reclaimed greenfield area.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the RTPSI 2050 integrates Geographic Information Systems and Building Information Modelling databases, a digital revolution intended to make planning documents more flexible and investor-friendly.
“The Silicon Island development is seen as a new canvas for the state to draft a future city that is progressive, sustainable and resilient,” he said at the programme’s launch.
He emphasised that the project is not merely a land reclamation but a “new canvas” for building a future city model balancing economic progress with environmental sustainability.
The artificial island is targeted to become a 930.777-hectare Global Gateway to address the state’s industrial land shortage, with a projected economic contribution of up to RM1.1 trillion to the national Gross Domestic Product by 2050.
A total of 220,000 new jobs in high-tech, creative economy and modern services sectors are also expected to be created through the development.
Chow urged the public to submit their views as co-creators during the publicity period, which runs until May 8.
The Silicon Island is a state-owned reclamation project developed by the Penang government to ensure long-term economic growth.
