Around 590,000 residents in Penang are gearing up for a temporary water supply interruption set to take place from January 10 to 14 next year. The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is initiating this scheduled disruption to carry out essential repairs at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP), as announced by State exco Zairil Khir Johari during a press conference at Komtar today.

Zairil Khir Johari explained that the aging infrastructure at the WTP, with some components over 50 years old, has led to persistent leaks. The shutdown is deemed necessary to address these issues, specifically the replacement of two main valves that were due for replacement in the past two years but couldn't find a suitable window for the operation.

The planned WTP shutdown is anticipated to last 24 hours to facilitate the replacement of valves and other necessary repairs. Zairil assured the public that the resumption of water supply would be gradual, with some consumers having their supply restored in 48 hours. However, others further down the line might experience delays of up to 96 hours.

To minimize disruptions, Zairil highlighted that ancillary water works projects would concurrently be conducted at 22 locations across the state. These additional projects aim to address multiple repair needs and reduce non-revenue water (NRW), which currently stands at 28.6 percent monthly, caused by the existing leakages.

The affected consumers, totaling 590,000 across the island and mainland, including Seberang Perai and non-domestic consumers in industrial areas, are urged to prepare for the temporary inconvenience. Zairil emphasized the importance of not delaying the repair works, as further postponement could result in sudden and unanticipated water disruptions.

Consumers have been given a month's notice to prepare for the scheduled water supply interruption. Zairil assured the public that local government officials, led by state exco H'ng Mooi Lye, will coordinate the dispatch of water tankers to affected areas, especially in low-rise areas and hospitals. High-rise buildings, factories, and hotels are advised to utilize their water tanks during the interruption.

Zairil further recommended that car wash centers and laundromats refrain from operating during the specified period. Even consumers with a water supply during this time are encouraged to use water judiciously.

The areas directly affected by the water supply disruption include a majority of Seberang Perai, Pulau Tikus, George Town, Jelutong, Gelugor, Bukit Jambul, Relau, Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru, Batu Maung, Teluk Kumbar, and Balik Pulau. However, areas such as Air Itam, Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi, and Teluk Bahang will not be affected, as they receive water supply from the Air Itam Dam and Teluk Bahang Dam.
