A Malaysian woman recently shared how she had retrieved her stolen helmet after it was taken from her motorcycle outside of an eatery in Jelutong, Penang.

The woman, Jazz Tan Yee Mei, took to her Facebook profile to share how she had found the helmet thief attempting to sell her stolen helmet at a secondhand market there.

She wrote, “At 8pm yesterday (February 17), someone stole my helmet while I was having a meeting in Sushi Ya. I had to ask for CCTV footage from the management and the outlets that could capture the thief. I reported this to the police in Jelutong and had a very long conversation with the policeman.”

“The sergeant told me all about Penang’s theft problems and many cases were left unresolved because of lack of evidence. The sergeant also mentioned gathering more CCTV footage if I could see the number plate or even check all the secondhand markets in Penang.”

She added that the police categorised helmet theft as “small cases” and would not allocate many resources to such cases.

She found her helmet at a secondhand market

Hence, she decided to follow the sergeant’s advice and went to a secondhand market, Lorong Kulit, in an attempt to find her stolen helmet. And that attempt proved fruitful.

“I followed the sergeant’s advice and also went to the secondhand market, Lorong Kulit, to scout. Guess what? I found the thief and my helmet. The sergeant told me to pass my phone over to him and mentioned that the police would come and make an arrest if he didn’t return my helmet,”

“I took back my helmet and left. So, the moral of the story is that, if you have any valuables in Penang that have gone missing, you can consider taking the steps I took above,” she added.

The thief apologised for stealing

In the comment section, Jazz clarified that she knew it was her helmet as she identified it by the markings she made.

“I have markings inside my helmet, the scratches on my cover are at the exact same place, the belt area was also torn a little and it smelt exactly like my hair gel,”

“Also, he apologised for stealing.”
