TAWAU: A pensioner lost RM300 after his backpack was stolen by a man who claimed that a nail was stuck in the former’s rear tyre at Jalan Bunga, here, Saturday.
Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 57-year-old victim also lost his identification documents, bank cards and other items kept inside the backpack.
Preliminary findings showed that the man was inside his car when an unknown individual suddenly approached and tapped on his car window at about 11.15am.
“The stranger claimed that a nail had become lodged in the victim’s car’s rear tyre, prompting the victim to step out of his vehicle to inspect.”
“When the victim returned to his car, he discovered that his backpack, which was kept on the passenger’s front seat, was missing,” said Jasmin in a statement here on Sunday.
The victim subsequently lodged a police report at 11.32am and the case is being probed under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft. On that note, Jasmin advised the public to always be wary, including during festive seasons when going out to shop.
He said criminals are out looking to take advantage on those busy preparing for the festive season. He also said that police will increase patrol and inspections during the festive season to ensure public safety. A 1.32 second CCTV footage of the incident showed a man peering into the victim’s car.
The man was then observed tapping on the victim’s car window, causing the victim to come out of the car as the intruder snatched something through the open driver’s door.
