
- Laurence Billam, aged 92, has admitted to the manslaughter of his 87-year-old wife Shirley Billam by reason of diminished responsibility, whilst denying a charge of murder.
- Emergency services discovered the body of Mrs Billam at the couple's home on Millbrook Lane, Exeter, on the afternoon of 19 April.
- Prosecuting barrister Ray Tully KC informed Exeter Crown Court that the plea was acceptable to the Crown following psychiatric evaluations from three separate experts and consultations with the family and police.
- Judge James Patrick described the case as unusual and adjourned sentencing until 20 November to allow time for pre-sentence reports to be compiled by probation and adult social services.
- The defendant was remanded into custody following his appearance via video link from prison and was urged by the judge to co-operate with officials preparing his reports.
