A 63-year-old pensioner lost RM96,000 in an online investment scam promising high returns, with police investigating the case under cheating laws.

KUALA TERENGGANU: A female pensioner has lost RM96,000 after being ensnared by a long-running online investment scam.

The 63-year-old victim first encountered an advertisement for a Labuan-based investment scheme on WhatsApp in 2022.

She subsequently contacted the suspect and began transferring money. Between 2022 and March 14 this year, she made 50 transactions totalling RM96,000 to 15 different bank accounts.

The funds came from her personal savings and pension. After four years of participation, the victim received no returns on her investment.

Growing tired of waiting, she realised she had been deceived. The victim lodged a police report at 6.30 pm yesterday.

Kuala Terengganu police chief Azli Mohd Noor confirmed the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
