KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — The people’s mandate seen in state polls results will form the basis of togetherness for the cooperation of all parties in the unity government, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said this is to ensure the unity bloc remains strong in governing the country for the next five years.
Zahid, who is Umno president, said his party and its partners in the unity bloc respect the results of the state elections, which saw them retaining control in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Penang.
“To all who fulfilled their responsibility by voting (and) nourishing the process of democracy in the country, we have the highest appreciation for your commitment and concern to determine a brighter future for the state and country,” he said in a statement last night.
Zahid congratulated the victors and said he hopes they will shoulder the people’s mandate to serve as best they can.
“For those who did not succeed, persist and don’t ever stop fighting for the people’s aspirations when faced with challenges,” he said.
He thanked all party members, the party machinery and volunteers who worked hard in helping Barisan Nasional (BN) during the election campaign.
Earlier, Zahid accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the Harapan-BN war room at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur to follow the official announcement of election results.
