PETALING JAYA: Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Bung Moktar Radin says the public will be upset regardless of the coalition’s choice in the current political impasse.

The Kinabatangan MP said whatever decision BN makes, there would be people unhappy if the coalition were to form the government or be a part of the opposition.

“I’m surprised. BN only won 30 parliamentary seats but suddenly we’re involved in the crisis over the formation of the government,” he said on Twitter.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 82 seats in Saturday’s election while Perikatan Nasional (PN) won 73, both well short of the simple majority of 112 required in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.

PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, had asked PN and PH to work together in forming a unity government, but PN turned this down as it was firm on not working with PH.

Sultan Abdullah met representatives from BN and Gabungan Parti Sarawak earlier today.

According to Malaysiakini, the King told BN leaders that the coalition must be part of a unity government.

BN secretary-general Zambry Abd Kadir yesterday said that while no BN MP had backed Muhyiddin for the prime minister’s post, the coalition was open to discussions with any party to ensure that a government can be formed for the sake of the country.

PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim previously said the coalition had held discussions with BN to form the new government.
