Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, has cautioned Malaysians against the growing spread of slander, hatred, and toxic rhetoric on social media, describing it as a dangerous trend that undermines religious values and cultural traditions. Speaking at the Maulidur Rasul 1447H celebration in Ipoh, he stressed that unchecked words and reckless use of technology have become instruments of harm, tearing apart unity and harmony among the community.

He reminded that the Muslim ummah today faces the pressing challenge of preserving solidarity through the spirit of ukhuwah (kinship). Instead of strengthening ties, political disputes, racial divides, and ideological differences have given rise to polemics that weaken the fabric of society. Such behaviour, he said, contradicts the counsel of Prophet Muhammad, who had warned against mockery, offensive labelling, suspicion, gossip, and unfounded accusations.

According to Sultan Nazrin, crossing the limits of good manners and customs creates divisions, particularly when people disregard religious principles and cultural refinement. This erosion, he explained, not only distorts moral values but also risks leaving the younger generation misguided, detached from their traditions, and vulnerable to harmful influences.

The Sultan emphasised that Malaysia’s youth must not lose sight of the sacrifices made by earlier generations. He recalled the bitter history of colonialism, noting that the struggles endured by their forefathers were not merely about gaining independence but about fostering unity across races and faiths. The meaning of freedom, he said, should be deeply understood so that it continues to inspire collective responsibility and mutual respect.

In a firm reminder, Sultan Nazrin stressed that past agreements which laid the foundation of Malaysia’s independence and unity must not be treated lightly. Questioning or disregarding these understandings, he warned, risks fuelling mistrust at a time when political rhetoric increasingly exploits issues of race and religion.

He urged Malaysians to return to the values of respect, piety, and restraint, highlighting that society must not allow slander and hatred to dominate its discourse. The pursuit of unity, he said, must remain a priority, especially in an age where technology has the power to divide as much as it has to connect.

Through his reminder, the Sultan underscored the importance of grounding national harmony in shared values and historical consciousness, warning that division will only weaken the nation’s resilience if left unchecked.
