Perikatan’s Labuan MP now backs Anwar’s leadership

KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional’s Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman has expressed support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership.

The Labuan MP said that he came to the decision upon taking into account all the problems faced by the people of Labuan, who are faced with rising cost of living, as well as continuous interruption of water and power supply.

Suhaili also expressed support for Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor, who is chairman of the state’s ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

Suhaili is the second PN lawmaker to publicly express his backing for Anwar, who is chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and president of PKR, this month.

On October 12, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid had announced his resolved to support Anwar’s leadership.

Iskandar had also said that he would not leave or betray his party Bersatu under any circumstances on the principle of obedience and loyalty to the party.

Suhaili today similarly maintained his allegiance to Bersatu.

“To avoid any doubt, I would like to emphasise that by expressing my support for the leadership of the prime minister and also the leadership of the chief minister of Sabah, I will continue to be obedient, loyal and remain as an MP for Bersatu,” he was quoted as saying.

He said that although his move risks the possibility of disciplinary action from the party, he is ready to accept it for the Labuan people’s welfare, and to ensure that voters in his constituency are protected from remaining as victims of the dire situation here.

He said that he does not want them to fall behind in various aspects of development due to contentious political differences as being seen now.

“I hereby support the government’s policies and initiatives in matters that prioritise efforts to strengthen the development, economy and welfare of the people of this country until the 16th general election arrives,” he said.

Suhaili added that his decision to support the prime minister was made without any coercion or pressure from any party, stressing that he did it wholeheartedly for the benefit of the people of Labuan.

In the 15th general election in November, Suhaili had obtained 8,124 votes after defeating Datuk Bashir Alias from Barisan Nasional with a majority of 708 votes. – The Vibes, October 30, 2023
