Perikatan yet to discuss no-confidence vote against PM: Wan Fayhsal

KUALA LUMPUR – The opposition has not discussed plans to propose a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament, said Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

While the Machang MP said such talks have never taken off due to “difficult technicalities” involving Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul, he did not elaborate on his claims.

Wan Fayhsal, however, appeared to hint that Perikatan Nasional (PN) is not entirely dismissing the idea of a no-confidence motion as the coalition believes in a democratic parliamentary system.

“PN is well aware that there are difficult technicalities (with calling for a no-confidence motion) because of the speaker (Johari).

“But, anything can happen, it’s a democracy. As MPs, we have a right to give our confidence to any MP that deserves to be prime minister,” he told reporters outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters here today.

He also alleged that Johari is “biased” and that the PKR veteran is part of “Anwar’s people”.

Last weekend, Anwar, who is also PKR president and Pakatan Harapan chairman, had said that any party or MP wanting a motion of no-confidence should call for one at the next parliamentary session.

Urging MPs to take their grievances with him to the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar said complaints about political instability must stop so the government’s focus would be directed towards protecting the welfare of the people.

Last December, Anwar had passed a parliamentary motion of confidence in his leadership – which he himself had called for to allay any doubts on the legitimacy of his administration – through a voice vote

Prior to that, PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who had consistently claimed that he had the majority support needed to form the government, had challenged Anwar to prove that he had the necessary backing to be prime minister. – The Vibes, May 12, 2023
