On 17 November, a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched after a man was swept away by a sudden surge of water in the Klang River near Saloma Link, Kuala Lumpur.
As we’ve shared previously, the incident happened around 5:30 PM when the victim was trying to move his vehicle, which had been parked under the bridge while he was carrying out pipe improvement work.
The victim’s body was found four days later
The victim’s body was found four days later, about 45 kilometres from where he was reported missing, according to Berita Harian.
Following this, the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) confirmed that the victim, Suresh a/l Kamalanathan, was a contributor under the employees’ protection scheme through the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4).
In a statement, PERKESO has also confirmed that the 37-year-old’s next of kin is eligible to receive benefits.
“The last recorded contribution was in April. PERKESO quickly reached out to the employer, and thanks to swift action, the late contributor’s outstanding contributions from May to October were fully settled on 18 November.
“This ensured he remained an active contributor and that his next of kin could receive full protection from PERKESO.”
His family is eligible to receive RM2,655 per month for life
PERKESO said the victim’s wife and child are eligible for the Dependent’s Benefit (Faedah Orang Tanggungan, FOT), with their shares totalling RM2,655 per month, plus a one-time Funeral Management Benefit of RM3,000.
“We will make sure the claims process goes smoothly and will soon carry out a care visit programme. Employers are also reminded to keep employee contributions up to date, especially for those working in high-risk environments,” PERKESO added.
