KUALA LUMPUR – Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has confirmed that the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) is ready to assist those affected by the recent explosion at Help University. In addition to initial relief provided by the Higher Education Ministry, Perkeso, along with the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma), will offer further support to the victims.
"The victims have sustained severe trauma and remain in critical condition in the hospital. Our collective prayers are with them for a full and speedy recovery," Ramanan said to reporters after the KESUMA Monthly Assembly and the 2026 New Year Address today, according to Bernama.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Monday, led to the death of a 24-year-old student from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar). The victim, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student, was due to complete his industrial placement on the same day.
Reports indicate the explosion took place around 11.40 am at Help University in Bukit Damansara. The blast, which involved an air-conditioning compressor, also left nine others injured, including four students.
In the meantime, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is working to complete its investigation report within two weeks. According to Datuk Ahmad Izram Osman, Deputy Director-General (Operations) at JBPM, the investigation remains active.
“At this stage, no further announcements can be made as the investigation is ongoing. Our Fire Investigation Division is currently working to determine the cause of the incident. As a technical agency, we cannot speculate or provide preliminary conclusions without full verification,” Ahmad Izram said.
He further explained that the inquiry is comprehensive, covering everything from reviewing recorded communications to examining relevant equipment, as well as inspecting the manufacturers and owners involved.
“Analysis with specialised instruments, such as Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, generally requires around one week or more. Should more advanced technology be needed, we will send the samples to an accredited chemical laboratory for further examination,” he added. - January 15, 2026
