I can still recall PERKIM was founded by the late First Prime Minister, Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and registered on 19 August, 1960. After its extablishment, the Tunku was appointed as an advisor until 1971 and was elected as President until 1989. It realizing the fundamental objectives of its establishment, PERKIM practices spreading the message of Islamic preaching based on charitable works that have been proven to have benefited all groups of society in Malaysia, as well as being able to improve the image of Islam and eliminate any negative prejudices against true Islamic teachings. PERKIM's slogan, “Islam is brotherhood” is a pillar that should always be lived and practiced where PERKIM should be used as the true “heart” to unite Muslims, especially members and the local community in general. There are 13 states or divisions of PERKIM throughout the country, and the National PERKIM Secretariat based in Kuala Lumpur channels allocations for staff studies and also for some specific activities at the state level which has to be in line with the National policy. The main aim is to ease the burden of those in need with various aid sector including food, health, education and livelihood.
Recently, I visited the Head offices of PERKIM & the Regional Islamic Da'wah Council of Southeast Asia & The Pacific (RISEAP), located in Kuala Lumpur which are classified as associations or non-governmental & non-profit organizations (NGOs). Presently, RISEAP has 44 ordinary members & 10 associate members from 22 counties and territories. RISEAP can reasonably claim to be truly represented body since the committees are elected during the AGM.
RISEAP was born on 11th November, 1980 and Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj became the first President until 1988. The fundamental objectives are to foster co-operation and closer relationships among Islamic organizations in the region and co-ordinate efforts towards efficient Islamic movement. Under the modern & dynamic leadership of RISEAP current President who's Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, RISEAP positions itself as an inclusive, moderate platform that bridges Muslims and non-Muslims through shared universal values and community development.
