The northern Malaysian state will prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes beginning 1 August, citing religious and public health grounds
PERLIS will implement a state-wide ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes and vaping products starting 1 August, Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli announced today.
He said the move is in line with the 2022 ruling by the Perlis State Fatwa Committee, which declared vaping to be haram (prohibited in Islam).
“In this regard, vape traders (in Perlis) must be ready to find new businesses, as their licences and business operations will be halted (starting 1 August),” he told reporters following an executive council meeting at the State Legislative Assembly Complex.
Mohd Shukri acknowledged that completely eradicating vape use may not be feasible, but maintained that banning sales was a necessary step to prevent youth from becoming dependent on the habit.
He added that local authorities (PBT) would begin enforcement operations against businesses selling vape products after the ban takes effect.
In a separate announcement, the Menteri Besar said the Visit Perlis Year 2024–2025 campaign would continue into next year, aligning with the federal government’s Visit Malaysia 2026 initiative.
“We hope that tourist arrivals in Perlis will increase with Visit Malaysia Year going on concurrently, and that it will bring many benefits to the people of Perlis.
"I urge the people of Perlis to welcome tourists to boost the economy and to treat all tourists who come to Perlis perfectly,” he said, noting that the state had already achieved its previous target of approximately 3.5 million tourist arrivals last year.
He added that additional tourism programmes may be introduced next year to further enhance the current campaign. - May 14, 2025
