Perodua launches Alza 2022, with improved looks and ride

PERODUA has launched the redesigned Alza 2022. Boasting greater space for passengers and improved driveability, the mini MPV was unveiled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob this morning at the KL Convention Centre.

This is the first significant redesign of the B-segment national car since its launch in 2009. The large cabin and three-row seats can comfortably house seven adults and still leave ample room for luggage.

Present at the launch was Daihatsu president Soichiro Okudaira.

The Alza's fuel efficiency is among the best in its class, at up to 22 kilometres per litre, said Perodua president and CEO Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

All three Alza variants come with Android Auto, RFID sticker and the Perodua Smart Drive Assist (PSDA) suite. This is made up of Advanced Safety Assist (ASA), Driver Assist, Parking Assist and Headlamp Assist.

The ASA crash avoidance supporting system (also known as Smart Assist) is provided in all grades and is configured for high-speed travelling on Malaysian roads. The Blind Spot Monitor will aid the driver in looking back during lane change. It also includes the Auto High Beam.

There is also 360° Panaromic View, Electronic Parking Brake with Auto Brake Hold, Rear Disc Brake and the new Drive Mode of Normal, Eco and Power.

With a front engine and front-wheel drive system, the Alza is powered by a 1.5l Dual VVT-i engine (as per facelifted Myvi) and D-CVT transmission.

According to Daihatsu, the redesign applied a B-segment platform based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA). This platform was also used on the compact Daihatsu Xenia which was launched in Indonesia last year.

Both the Alza and Xenia share the same platform as the third-generation Toyota Avanza, which was launched in November last year. Toyota also has a flagship iteration of the Avanza, called the Veloz, which is a premium version of the model that features a redesigned bumper, front hood, and front and rear panels, apart from other varying interior features.

The new look has a decidedly sporty and sleek interior as well as exterior, as preferred by Malaysians. The 2009 first-generation Alza was widely received by families.

Perodua has had the largest share of the Malaysian car market for 16 years straight, from 2006 to 2021. It launched the first DNGA-based compact SUV Ativa last year, also a first for Daihatsu’s overseas venture.

The new Alza is priced from RM62,500 for the X, RM68,000 for the mid-spec H and RM75,500 for the AV variant. – The Vibes, July 20, 2022
