PERODUA has officially launched Malaysia’s first locally made electric vehicle, the QV-E, representing a significant milestone for the national automaker and the country’s growing EV ecosystem.
The model, developed at a cost of RM800 million, was unveiled in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
“Perodua has successfully fulfilled all the commitments set by MITI and others. Its investment is RM800 million. More than 100 local experts were involved in the development,” said Anwar, highlighting the pride in a vehicle produced by local expertise.
The QV-E, short for ‘Quest for Visionary-Electric’, is designed for urban commuting and moderate-range travel.
It is powered by a 52.5kW Lithium Iron Phosphate battery, offering a driving range of up to 445 kilometres, depending on driving style, temperature, and road conditions.
The vehicle features advanced safety technology, including a Child Presence Detection system capable of identifying vital signs such as breathing in rear seats, even when obscured by fabric or blankets, reducing the risk of incidents involving children or pets left in the car.
Perodua’s President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad confirmed that the company currently produces 500 units per month at a starting price of RM80,000, excluding insurance and the battery.
Production is set to rise to 3,000 units per month by the third quarter of 2026. The company has introduced a ‘Battery as a Service’ leasing model, with customers paying RM275 per month over nine years for the battery separately from the vehicle.
Developed with 60 per cent local content, the QV-E incorporates components such as body panels, harnesses, and key electronics.
Perodua is working closely with domestic vendors, with 52 companies currently supplying parts for the QV-E.
This figure is expected to increase to 70 suppliers by 2030, supporting the goals of the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) to strengthen Malaysia’s green mobility and low-carbon automotive sector.
Available in Ice Blue and Caviar Grey, the QV-E targets middle-income buyers and those seeking a second or daily-use vehicle.
Its launch marks a strategic push to advance Malaysia’s position in the regional EV ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions. - December 1, 2025
