Previously, we shared how Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) will be producing affordable electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia by the end of this year, which are touted to be priced under RM100,000.
With that in mind, Perodua CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad recently shared a few teasers about the company’s upcoming EV, including touting a new concept that would allow for an affordable price: Owners leasing the EV battery separately.

Speaking to the media during an “Up Close & Casual with Perodua” session on Thursday (6 February), Zainal shared that the Perodua EV could be priced under RM80,000 with the concept.
He was quoted by Harian Metro as saying that the EV battery would be owned by Perodua and leased to the vehicle owners, with the price of leasing set at the minimum amount.
The Perodua CEO added that the company has conducted studies on the matter, and many consumers support this battery leasing model.
Zainal thus lauded the model as being able to make the prices of Perodua EV lower while assuring consumers would always have their EV batteries in the best condition.

Moreover, since the batteries are owned by the manufacturer, they can be replaced if there are any problems.
Besides that, the manufacturer can provide the latest in battery technology to consumers if there is a breakthrough in the industry, and consumers also don’t have to be responsible for recycling the batteries as they’re owned by the manufacturer.
For the Perodua EV project, Zainal asserted that the company will be using its self-developed technology with assistance from local and overseas vendors.
