There are festivals that entertain. There are festivals that attract crowds. And then there are festivals that transform an entire city.
For three unforgettable days and nights from July 31 to Aug 2, Kuantan belonged to the people.
The city came alive as an estimated 100,000 visitors converged on Pesta Kuantan 188, where celebrations unfolded simultaneously on land, on water and in the air.
There were sporting competitions, cultural performances, concerts, family activities, food festivals and spectacular fireworks, many centred around the iconic Kuantan 188 Tower.
By the time the final fireworks illuminated the night sky, the message was unmistakable.
Kuantan had come of age.
Running Above Gravity
The excitement began with Malaysia's world champion tower runner Soh Wai Ching.
Competing in the Kuantan 188 Towerthon Challenge, Wai Ching sprinted barefoot up the 524 steps of the 188-metre observation tower, stopping the clock in 2 minutes and 10 seconds — three seconds faster than his previous record.
For most people, climbing 66 flights of steps is exhausting.
For Wai Ching, it was simply another record to break.
Moments later, he celebrated with his wife Jennifer Chan Yee Chin, who finished third in the Women's Open category, before lifting their eight-month-old son Victor high into the air.
"Tower running runs in our family," he laughed.
"And yes, I would encourage my son to do it too when he grows up, provided that's what he wants."
Later, the family relaxed over Irish sandwiches at O'Briens with friends.
Wai Ching believes tower running deserves greater recognition.
"I feel very happy to break my Kuantan 188 Tower record. To me, tower running is the best sport. You don't get injured because you are not impacted by gravity when you run up the stairs. That's why I can even run barefoot."
A Festival by the River
While runners conquered the tower, another battle was unfolding on the Kuantan River.
The Royal Pahang Dragon Boat Regatta attracted 61 teams, including two international crews.
The Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Team captured the prestigious Pahang Open (Mixed) title in 1:41.74, while Zhao Long Zhaoqing China finished second in 1:45.12.
The finish line lay directly in front of Kuantan 188 Tower, creating one of the country's most spectacular sporting backdrops.
Just a few metres away, another sporting phenomenon was taking place.
The Resorts World Genting Pahang Pickleball Championships drew 128 teams competing on riverside courts cooled by breezes drifting across from the Kuantan River.
Families spread picnic mats beneath shady trees. People bought drinks and food alongside the Kuantan Riverfront. Children played on the lawns. Spectators alternated between watching dragon boats slicing through the water and exciting pickleball rallies.
It was sport in a setting unlike any conventional indoor setting.
Tournament director Shaden Hsing described the event as a resounding success.
"Most participants had never experienced outdoor pickleball in such a beautiful environment before," he said.
"It was refreshing, enjoyable and completely different."
Interest exceeded expectations.
More than 400 entries were received, but organisers had to limit participation to 128 teams because there were only four courts due to space constraints.
Next year, an inter-district competition has been planned to cater for the overwhelming response.
Music, Majesty and Fireworks
As darkness descended, attention shifted beneath the towering Kuantan 188.
Thousands packed the open grounds for a free concert featuring Malaysia's legendary Dato' M. Nasir, Nadeera, hit boy band Alpha and several other popular performers.
Among the audience were the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, and the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
One unforgettable moment belonged to M. Nasir.
Leaving the stage, he walked towards the royal couple while performing his timeless classic Raikan Cinta.
More than simply a love song, Raikan Cinta is regarded as one of Malaysian music's most poetic works, exploring themes of humanity, compassion and spiritual love.
The performance became a tribute as much as a concert.
Moments later, fireworks exploded above Kuantan 188, bathing the river and surrounding skyline in brilliant colours.
A Royal Celebration
This year's festival coincided with the birthdays of the Sultan of Pahang and the Tengku Ampuan.
Celebrations began with an exclusive gala dinner at Zenith Hotel Kuantan, where guests enjoyed an unexpected highlight.
The royal couple themselves sang several songs, delighting invited guests who sang along and celebrated in an atmosphere of warmth and informality.
Throughout the festival, Their Royal Highnesses visited numerous venues, greeting participants, encouraging athletes and mingling with spectators.
Their presence added a special touch that many visitors will long remember.
Taking to the Skies
While dragon boats ruled the river and athletes conquered the tower, others chose to admire Kuantan from above.
Hot-air balloons floated gracefully above Padang Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan, offering panoramic views of the city.
From the air, the magnificent Masjid Negeri Sultan Ahmad Shah 1 stood proudly in blue and white, while the Kuantan skyline stretched towards the South China Sea.
After sunset, photographs taken from surrounding buildings revealed a city sparkling beneath the illuminated Kuantan 188 Tower, creating scenes worthy of a postcard.
A Festival with Something for Everyone
Beyond the headline attractions, visitors were spoilt for choice.
Adventure seekers challenged themselves in the Kuantan 188 Antenna Climb.
Fitness enthusiasts joined the Edutourism Xplore Fun Run.
Motorsport fans were thrilled by the smell of burning rubber and tandem drifting during the Kuantan 188 Drift Car Event.
Car enthusiasts gathered for the premium Cars and Coffee meet, while gamers competed in the Kuantan 188 E-Battle esports tournament.
Meanwhile, Pasar Serlah became a magnet for food lovers, showcasing Pahang's rich culinary heritage alongside products from local entrepreneurs.
Mayor of Kuantan Dato' Zaliza Zulkipli was delighted with both the local and international participation.
"This year we welcomed 61 dragon boat teams, including competitors from Hong Kong and China," he said.
“They competed in four categories including an inter-district category.”
The Team Behind the Celebration
While visitors enjoyed the festivities, another team was quietly running its own marathon behind the scenes.
Trinidad Hospitality president and group CEO Dato' Sri Naresh Mohan and group director of business development Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad were constantly moving between venues to ensure every programme, competition and event ran smoothly.
Their commitment came at a price.
On the third day, Zulkifli suffered heat stroke after spending long hours under the blazing sun overseeing operations.
Fortunately, he recovered quickly.
His experience served as a reminder that successful festivals depend just as much on those working tirelessly behind the scenes as on those standing in the spotlight.
An Iconic Festival Comes of Age
Now in its fifth edition, Pesta Kuantan 188 has definitely established itself as one of Malaysia's signature festivals.
Promoted as one of the region's largest lifestyle and community sports events, this year's edition featured 14 signature activities showcasing Pahang as a premier destination for tourism, sports, culture and family recreation.
Supported by Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan, the Pahang State Government, Tourism Pahang and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the festival has evolved into far more than an annual celebration.
It has become a showcase of everything modern Kuantan represents.
There was sport that inspired.
There was music that united.
There was culture that celebrated identity.
There was food that brought people together.
Above all, there was community.
For three remarkable days, Kuantan did not merely host a festival.
It celebrated itself.
And judging by the crowds filling the riverfront, the cheers echoing up the tower, the dragon boats cutting through the river and the fireworks lighting the skies above Kuantan 188, this celebration has firmly earned its place on Malaysia's tourism calendar.
