Something happened yesterday that most Malaysians scrolled past while watching World Cup highlights. And that's a shame, because what PM Anwar Ibrahim announced from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan deserves a lot more attention than it's been given.

On June 19, 2026, following a two-day official visit to Turkmenistan, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) had successfully secured access to one of the world's largest gas fields, through a landmark agreement signed with the Turkmenistan government. He described it as "an extraordinary achievement" that places Petronas among the owners of the world's largest gas fields. He wasn't being modest. The scale of what this means is genuinely significant.

Turkmenistan sits on the fourth-largest natural gas reserves in the world, estimated at approximately 265 trillion cubic feet. The Galkynysh gas field alone, which Petronas is now involved in developing, is one of the biggest single gas deposits on the planet. This is not a minor exploration deal. This is Malaysia's national oil company being granted access to a tier-one global energy asset.

The backstory is worth knowing. Petronas has been operating in Turkmenistan since 1996, making 2026 its 30th anniversary in the country. Three decades of consistent, professional upstream work built the trust that made yesterday's agreement possible. Anwar acknowledged this in his remarks, noting that his personal involvement was specifically requested because Turkmenistan wanted the PM's direct commitment as a signal of Malaysia's seriousness. He flew to Ashgabat despite a packed domestic schedule that includes an imminent Johor state election.

The significance for Malaysia's domestic energy security is substantial. Anwar said the deal alleviates concerns about domestic gas supply shortages while enhancing Petronas's ability to export gas to Japan, South Korea, China, and other major buyers. Both of those outcomes matter. Malaysia's own gas reserves are not inexhaustible. The ability to secure upstream production rights in one of the world's most gas-rich nations is exactly the kind of long-term strategic play that energy security requires.

The Edge Malaysia had reported as recently as June 6 that Anwar was debating whether to make the trip given the domestic political schedule but committed once he understood the scale of what was available. "For the country, I have no choice. I will go," he said. That decision has now paid off with one of the most significant energy deals in Petronas's history.

My Opinion

This is the kind of story that gets overshadowed by everything louder and faster, which is exactly why I'm writing about it. Petronas is a genuinely world-class company that most Malaysians take for granted because it's always been there. Its revenues fund a significant portion of the national budget. Its dividends to the government support the subsidies that keep everyday life functional. A deal of this scale isn't just good corporate news. It's national security. It deserves to be front page.
