Petronas confirms the arrival of one million barrels of Iraqi crude, ensuring national fuel supply stability through mid-2026.

KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has taken delivery of one million barrels of Iraqi crude oil.

The shipment arrived in Malaysia aboard the vessel Ocean Thunder.

The cargo originated from Basrah in Iraq. Petronas stated the delivery is part of ongoing efforts to maintain national fuel supply stability.

In an update on its official Instagram account, the national oil company provided details of the shipment. “Ocean Thunder carries a portion of the 38% of national crude oil imports transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” it said.

The company emphasised that Malaysia’s fuel supply is sourced from multiple locations. This diverse network across Petronas’s operations ensures security of supply.

Petronas confirmed that fuel supply across its stations nationwide is sufficient. Supplies are assured through to the end of June 2026.

The one million barrels of Basrah crude can be refined into approximately 159 million litres of petroleum products. This output includes between 62 million and 64 million litres of diesel.

It also yields between 45 million and 48 million litres of petrol. Between 22 million and 24 million litres of aviation fuel can be produced.

The refining process will generate between five million and six million litres of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Other products will amount to between 18 million and 25 million litres.

According to Wood Mackenzie (2025), Malaysia’s average daily fuel consumption is around 112 million litres. This daily usage comprises about 34 million litres of diesel.

It also includes 46 million litres of petrol and 12 million litres of aviation fuel. A further 20 million litres of LPG is consumed daily on average.
