A shopping centre in Selangor has faced fierce backlash after patrons expressed deep concern over an alpaca that was apparently left unattended during a petting zoo event, prompting calls for action.

In the video, several people appear visibly concerned for the animal’s welfare, with one person pointing out that it had allegedly been left in a cage without water. Later in the footage, bystanders are seen attempting to give the animal water from a bottle.

The mall responded following the backlash

In a statement addressing the incident, Ampang Point Shopping Centre assured the public that the organiser was found to be compliant with regulations concerning the alpaca and other animals.

“The event is operated by a licensed third-party organiser. Inspections were carried out on-site by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) in January and February, and the organiser was found to be compliant with regulations,” the statement read.

The mall also explained that the animals are handled by experienced caretakers appointed by the organiser, asserting that they are fed and given proper rest in accordance with a strict care schedule.

“The alpaca is not kept at the mall on a continuous basis”

The mall further clarified that the alpaca was only brought in for weekend sessions. It added that any organiser involving animals must meet relevant regulatory and animal welfare standards before approval is granted.

“We acknowledge the concerns raised and have taken note of the feedback received. In light of this, the petting zoo event officially ended yesterday (18 February). We will also be reviewing how similar events are assessed moving forward.

“We understand that many people feel strongly about animal welfare, and we respect those views. The well-being of animals involved in events held on our premises is important to us.”
