PETRONAS Gas Berhad (PGB) has reiterated its steadfast commitment to adhering to the highest safety standards across all of its operations, following a recent fire incident at Putra Heights.
The company emphasised its ongoing dedication to ensuring the safety of communities, environmental protection, and the reliability of its services.
In a statement released today, PGB assured the public that it swiftly activated its pipeline remote safety system to bring the fire under control and successfully extinguish it.
"With reference to the fire incident at Putra Heights, the PGB team activated the pipeline remote safety system to bring the fire under control and finally extinguish it. All necessary measures have since been taken to ensure that the incident area is secure and safe," the company stated.
PGB further explained that it is taking proactive steps to implement contingency measures aimed at minimising disruptions to the gas supply.
The company is working closely with relevant government agencies and authorities to ensure a safe and swift restoration of supply, reiterating its commitment to providing uninterrupted energy access.
The affected pipeline, which is part of the Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) network, is designed and built to international standards, with a particular focus on public safety.
The pipeline underwent rigorous quality control and assurance processes before it was granted the Permit to Operate (PTO) by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health. The PTO ensures the safe design and operation of pipeline systems.
Additionally, PGB's ongoing asset integrity management programmes ensure the safe operation of its assets.
The company’s operations are supported by eight regional offices across Peninsular Malaysia, tasked with executing comprehensive inspection and maintenance activities.
These programmes include periodic internal pipeline inspections using advanced Pipeline Inspection Gauge technology.
Externally, PGB has implemented a Cathodic Protection system, supported by soil and slope movement monitoring to safeguard the pipeline infrastructure.
"These programmes are executed by PGB’s competent and qualified personnel," the statement added.
PGB also highlighted the 24/7 monitoring of its pipeline operations through state-of-the-art technologies such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Pipeline Leak Detection Systems, CCTV cameras, and Distributed Acoustic Systems, all managed from its Petronas Gas Control Centre (PGCC).
In a further demonstration of its commitment to safety, PGB conducts both ground and aerial surveillance using drones operated by qualified personnel, enabling rapid response to any abnormalities.
"In the event of any abnormalities, we can pinpoint the exact location via our SCADA and Realtime Petronas Geographic Information System, allowing us to alert the nearest response team from respective regional offices," the company added. – April 4, 2025
