PH anti-trafficking drive gains global recognition – DMW

THE Philippines has become a global model in the fight against human trafficking as the country continues to strengthen its coordinated efforts to prevent exploitation and protect victims, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said.

DMW Assistant Secretary Jerome Alcantara made the statement during the observance of the 2026 National Anti-Trafficking in Persons Awareness Month, with the theme “Iisang Nasyon, Iisang Aksyon: Tapusin ang Human Trafficking Ngayon!”

Alcantara said the Philippines’ campaign against human trafficking has been recognized internationally, describing the country’s approach as a “gold standard” in addressing the crime.

He emphasized that the government’s “whole-of-nation” approach was not simply a slogan but a comprehensive strategy that brings together different sectors to address trafficking at every stage.

The approach, he said, involves educating Filipinos on the risks and schemes used by traffickers, strengthening monitoring at the country’s entry and exit points, rescuing victims, and helping survivors recover and rebuild their lives.

Alcantara acknowledged that stopping human trafficking remains a continuing challenge as criminal groups and individuals continue to exploit vulnerable Filipinos.

He said authorities are sustaining efforts to disrupt trafficking operations through enforcement measures, including shutting down illegal recruitment activities, arresting suspects, and filing cases against recruitment agencies, manpower firms, and individuals found involved in trafficking.

The DMW official stressed that combating human trafficking requires continued cooperation among government agencies, private organizations, and communities to prevent more Filipinos from falling victim to exploitation. Franco Jose Baroña
