PH exporters earn P31.68B in Barcelona seafood expo

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday said Filipino exporters earned $514.8 million (about P31.68 billion) in consolidated sales at the 32nd Seafood Expo Global (SEG) in Barcelona.

The amount consisted of $450.6 million (P27.73 billion) in booked sales and $64.17 million (P3.95 billion) in negotiated deals, said DA Undersecretary for Fisheries Drusila Esther Bayate, who led the Philippine delegation at the event, said to be the world’s largest dedicated seafood trade exhibition.

“These results reflect not just strong demand, but the dedication of our exporters and the importance of government support in navigating international regulations and positioning Philippine seafood competitively,” Bayate said.

“SEG 2026 shows that, like the oceans themselves, there is a vast market for Philippine seafood if we improve standards and marketing,” Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said.

The event featured over 2,000 exhibitors and more than 35,000 seafood professionals and buyers from over 150 countries.

The Philippine pavilion showcased high-value products, including fresh and processed seafood, and highlighted technological innovations and sustainable practices.

The Philippine delegation included officials from the DA, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the Fisheries and Industry Development and Support Services Division, the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, and their regional offices.

The delegation provided 12 participating Philippine exporters with technical guidance on adherence to European standards, product positioning and market opportunities.

Extending support were Philippine Agriculture Attaché Nolet Fulgencio and Consul General Maria Theresa Lazaro, who helped with introductions and facilitating meetings with European buyers.

Officials pointed out the necessity of ongoing government support in technical assistance, logistics and regulatory compliance to guarantee that exporters can take advantage of international prospects.
