PH eyes spot in UN Security Council as voting nears

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is among seven United Nations member states running for five available seats at its security council, as it holds elections on Wednesday.

According to a UN report, the countries in the running are Austria, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe.

“The Philippines has campaigned under the slogan ‘Partner, Pathfinder, Peacemaker’ and positioned itself as a bridge-builder committed to strengthening peace through dialogue, the primacy of the rule of law and the rules-based international order, democratic values, and constructive engagement with all member states,” the report said.

“During its campaign, the Philippines has highlighted its longstanding commitment to multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, including international humanitarian law. It has underscored the importance of inclusive peace processes, drawing on its domestic experience, particularly in the Bangsamoro region, and committed to promoting preventive diplomacy, mediation, and the women, peace and security agenda,” it added.

The distribution of seats is among global regions, one seat for Africa, one for the Asia-Pacific, one seat for Latin America and the Caribbean, and two seats for Western Europe and Others.

The country previously served in the UN Security Council in 1957, 1963, 1980-1981, and 2004-2005.

According to the UN, the new members elected this year will start serving on Jan. 1, 2027 to Dec. 31, 2028.

The current seats at the Security Council belong to Somalia, Pakistan, Panama, Denmark, and Greece.
