A prominent leader from the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition has called upon the public, particularly the voters in the forthcoming twin by-elections in Johor, to remain cautious and not succumb to divisive narratives centred around royalty, race, and religion, which are being propagated by the Opposition.
Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, the president of Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), emphasized that certain parties with vested interests are intentionally sowing fear among the electorate by falsely asserting that the well-being of the Malay community and the practice of Islam are currently under threat.
"These political manoeuvres, exploiting sensitive themes, might be suitable for states like Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis," Mohamad stated during the inauguration of the Pulai PH operations room in Taman Perling last night.
In attendance were key figures such as Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong, PKR’s Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim, and Umno supreme council member Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who also holds the position of Pulai Umno division chief.
Mohamad, widely known as Mat Sabu, cautioned that the Opposition's promotion of ethno-religious sentiments could potentially rekindle a tragic event akin to the May 13, 1969 incident, and he urged voters to see through such tactics.
Exploring the collaboration between PH and Barisan Nasional (BN) in forming a unity government, Mohamad elucidated that this partnership between former rivals should not be seen as an anomaly.
"Similar situations have transpired globally, as seen recently in Indonesia, where political parties had to align forces after the victorious parties failed to establish a majority government," Mohamad explained. "The current developments in Malaysia are a courageous stride towards attaining both political and economic stability."
The twin by-elections for the Pulai parliamentary constituency and the Simpang Jeram state seat were necessitated by the passing of Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23, owing to a cerebral haemorrhage. At the age of 61, he was the incumbent representative for both constituencies. Additionally, Salahuddin had held the position of Amanah deputy president and had previously served as the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.
The Election Commission has scheduled the polling day for the Pulai parliamentary constituency and Simpang Jeram state seat by-elections on September 9, with early voting scheduled for September 5. As the by-elections draw near, the public is urged to focus on the issues that truly matter and resist falling into the trap of divisive narratives.
