PH, Malaysia to cooperate on energy security

THE Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday said the Philippines and Malaysia have forged closer coordination on energy security, following a high-level dialogue on April 22 to address risks to fuel supply stemming from geopolitical conflicts.

The meeting discussed ensuring stable and reliable energy supply, and strengthening market resilience amid volatility in global fuel markets, the DOE said.

The Philippine government affirmed its long-standing partnership with Malaysia, noting that continued engagement would support coordinated responses to evolving external risks.

Both countries reiterated their commitment to sustain cooperation under regional frameworks, particularly through the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) energy platforms.

The discussions also clarified that a previously disclosed diesel shipment to the Philippines was sourced through a commercial deal, not a government-to-government arrangement.

The shipment referenced in an earlier announcement by the Philippine National Oil Company-Exploration Corp. was procured via the Singapore office of international trader Vitol Asia PTE LTD, said the DOE.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin led the Philippine delegation at the meeting, alongside senior officials from the DOE and the Philippine National Oil Company, while Malaysia was represented by Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir and Foreign Affairs officials.

The DOE will preside as chair of the Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting-Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (AMEM-SOME) this year.
