PUTRAJAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) fully respects the powers and authority of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers in granting pardons, including in relation to the issue of a pardon for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
PH Election director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the matter had never been disputed, adding that PH’s position was based on its recognition of the jurisdiction of the royal institution in the matter.
"There is no dispute.
What we have raised is the view that we understand that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers have full authority and power to grant pardons. This has been acknowledged and has never been questioned,” he told reporters after the Selangor 2027 Budget Engagement Session here today.
He said this when asked to comment on the statement by Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, who accused PH of questioning the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's constitutional pardon powers.
Elaborating, Amirudin said PH also did not oppose any Pardons Board proceedings, which are said to be scheduled for tomorrow.
Meanwhile, commenting on a Kuala Lumpur DAP leader's view that party members should resign from the Cabinet if former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is granted a pardon, Amirudin said grassroots views should be respected.
However, he said PH must continue to fulfil the mandate given by the people after securing the most seats in the last general election and being entrusted with leading the government.
“We have delivered by bringing about economic success and maintaining stability amid crises in various places. Although we still have two or three issues to address, such as the 3R issues and the confidence of the Malay community, we still have a year left.
"I feel that we should fulfill the mandate that has been given to us and deliver to the best of our ability. Being defeatist is not a wise decision when the contest is not over,” he added.
