THE Philippines and Japan have reached a “new height” of strategic partnership, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya said Tuesday, citing security and economic ties.
Speaking at the Forum on Strengthening Strategic Ties: 70 Years of Japan–Philippines Diplomatic Relations organized by the Stratbase Institute, Endo said that both countries face similar challenges to maritime order, making closer security cooperation a “natural necessity.”
“As economies with various complementarities, situated in proximity and empowered by diligent peoples, our close economic ties are inevitable,” the ambassador said, adding that bilateral defense collaboration will continue to grow.
Endo also announced that the Japanese Embassy has expanded its military representation, welcoming an additional military attaché this month, bringing the total to three — covering the air, general and ground self-defense forces.
“I anticipate strengthened participation of the Japan Self-Defense Forces in upcoming exercises held in the Philippines, particularly in Balikatan,” he said. “By working together to safeguard peace and promote prosperity, we are expanding the possibilities for the future.”
The ambassador’s remarks come amid 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, commemorated in March as part of a celebration of “weaving the future together,” which symbolizes shared commitment to peace, prosperity and regional stability.
