Phivolcs reports moderate eruption at Kanlaon Volcano

MANILA, Philippines — Kanlaon Volcano had a moderately explosive eruption early Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The eruption, which lasted for three minutes, occurred at 7:33 a.m., Teresito Bacolcol, Phivolcs director, said.

“The event generated a dark gray eruption plume that rose two-three kilometers above the crater before drifting to the general east,” Bacolcol told The Manila Times.

He added that “poorly visible pyroclastic density currents or PDCs descended the southeastern slopes possibly within a kilometer of the summit crater.” Phivolcs said the Negros Island volcano is under Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) and entry into its four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone remains strictly prohibited.
