Kota Kinabalu: Senator Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe (pic) has urged the Sabah Government to consider introducing designated “Noise Control Zones” in densely populated urban areas following public complaints over a recent large-scale motorcycle gathering in the city.
Phoong said events such as Sabah Moto Day 9.0 that generate significant noise should not be held in or near densely populated residential areas if they disrupt residents’ daily lives and peace.
He said Kota Kinabalu’s increasing urbanisation meant major events and the use of public spaces should be more carefully regulated, with greater consideration given to noise levels, traffic impact, public safety and community wellbeing.
Phoong, who is also Sabah DAP Chairman, proposed that City Hall (DBKK) and other local authorities be empowered to assess major event applications more strictly, while clear rules should be introduced governing noise-sensitive areas and the types of activities permitted there.
He stressed that the proposal was not aimed at motorcycle enthusiasts or major public events, saying Kota Kinabalu should remain vibrant while ensuring economic activity and recreation were balanced with the quality of life of surrounding communities.
