A picturesque Greek beach has been dubbed “hell on earth” after it appeared to be overrun by a mass of tourists.

Footage from Balos Beach in Crete shows visitors packed shoulder-to-shoulder around the famous waters during the August peak season.

The beach is famous for its turquoise water and picturesque views, drawing thousands every year.

But this latest video has sparked outrage on social media, with many fearing damage to the beach and voicing their disgust over overtourism.

Now, Greek media reports local authorities are stepping in to protect it.

Under new proposals, visitors could be capped at just 1,200 people every three hours, whether they arrive by boat or by land.
