Pilot detained in Indonesia was cockpit observer, not operating crew member, says MAG

THE Malaysia Airlines pilot detained by Indonesian authorities at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport recently was not part of the flight crew operating the aircraft, Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) said on Friday.

MAG said the individual, a Second Officer, was seated in the additional cockpit seat as an observer and was not the pilot responsible for flying the aircraft.

"The individual was a Second Officer who occupied the additional cockpit seat as an observer and was not the pilot operating the aircraft.

"The individual had also not been on duty for two days before the incident," MAG said in a statement.

The company said the aircraft involved in the incident was operated safely throughout the flight by two qualified pilots.

The Second Officer was previously detained by Indonesian authorities after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 70,000 ecstasy pills.

MAG described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and contrary to the professional standards expected of all its employees.

Following the incident, MAG has launched mandatory drug screening for all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots, with the exercise expected to be completed by Aug 15. - August 7, 2026
